How to write the amount in words on a cheque
- Write the whole units in words, then the sub-unit: “One thousand two hundred and thirty-four pounds and fifty-six pence”. Many people add “only” at the end.
- Start at the left of the line and run a line through any space left over so nothing can be added.
- Keep the figures and the words identical. In the UK, if they differ, the sum in words is the amount payable (Bills of Exchange Act 1882, s. 9(2)).
- British usage puts “and” after hundreds and before the last tens: “one hundred and five”. Switch the style off if your bank uses the American form.
- In Pakistan and Bangladesh amounts are written with lakh and crore; the tool uses that for rupees and taka by default.

Frequently asked questions
What goes on the amount-in-words line of a cheque?
The sum in words, followed by the currency and the sub-unit, for example “fifty pounds and twenty pence only”. It should match the figures exactly.
Which wins if the words and figures differ?
Under section 9(2) of the UK Bills of Exchange Act 1882 the sum denoted by the words is the amount payable. Other countries have their own rules, so check your bank's guidance.
Is it “pence” or “penny”?
One penny, two or more pence: “one pound and one penny”, “two pounds and two pence”.
How do I write naira, rand and shillings?
Choose the currency from the list: “naira and kobo”, “rand and cents”, “shillings and cents”, “cedis and pesewas”. Naira, kobo and rand stay unchanged in the plural.
What are lakh and crore?
South Asian units: a lakh is 100,000 and a crore is 10,000,000. The tool uses them for rupees and taka by default and you can turn that off.
