How to write the amount in words on a US check
- Write the dollars in words, then “and” and the cents as a fraction over 100: “One Thousand Two Hundred and 45/100”, then the word “Dollars”.
- For whole dollars write “00/100”: “Five Hundred and 00/100 Dollars”.
- Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any space left over so nobody can add words.
- Make the numerals box and the written words match. If they ever disagree, the words normally control: the Uniform Commercial Code says words prevail over numbers.
- Do not use “and” inside the dollar amount; reserve it for the cents.

Frequently asked questions
Why write cents as a fraction like 45/100?
A fraction fills the line after the dollars so nothing can be added, and it keeps the written line short. It is the common convention for checks in the US.
Do I write “and” in “One Thousand Two Hundred Forty-Five”?
The usual check convention is no “and” inside the dollars, using it only before the cents fraction. This tool follows that.
What if the words and numbers do not match?
Under UCC § 3-114, words prevail over numbers, so the written line is what a bank is expected to follow. Banks may still return a check for the mismatch, so keep them identical.
Should “Dollars” be singular for one dollar?
On checks it is common to keep “Dollars” fixed after the fraction. You can edit the copied text if your bank prefers otherwise.
