What is a remove spaces tool?

Text copied from PDFs, emails, spreadsheets and web pages often carries stray spacing: double spaces between words, spaces before and after lines, tabs, and invisible no-break spaces. A remove spaces tool cleans that up without you editing line by line.

"Remove spaces" can mean four different things, and doing the wrong one can damage your text. Squeezing double spaces is harmless; deleting every space joins all your words together. So this tool makes you choose, and says exactly what each option does.

How to remove spaces from text

  1. Paste your text into the box.
  2. Choose what to remove:
    • Trim leading & trailing removes whitespace at the very start and end only.
    • Remove extra spaces leaves one space between words, trims each line and keeps line breaks.
    • Remove all spaces deletes every space character but keeps tabs and line breaks.
    • Remove all whitespace deletes spaces, tabs and line breaks.
  3. Check the result and the count of characters removed.
  4. Copy or download the cleaned text.

Remove spaces vs remove extra spaces

Remove extra spaces is what most people want when text looks messy. It keeps words apart: Hello world becomes Hello world. Tabs between words become a single space, and spaces at the start and end of each line go.

Remove all spaces deletes every space, so words run together: Hello world becomes Helloworld. That is useful for phone numbers, codes, IDs and card numbers, such as +44 20 7946 0000 → +442079460000.

Trimming is the gentlest: Hello world becomes Hello world, and nothing inside the text changes.

Remove spaces vs remove all whitespace

A space is one character. Whitespace is the whole family of invisible spacing characters: spaces, tabs, line breaks, no-break spaces (common in text copied from the web, such as 10 km) and the other spaces defined by Unicode.

Remove all spaces removes space characters, including no-break spaces, and keeps tabs and line breaks, so a list stays a list. Remove all whitespace removes everything, including line breaks, and joins every line into one. Use it for things like a compact token or a value that must not contain any whitespace at all.

Zero-width characters are invisible too, but Unicode doesn't count them as whitespace, so no mode removes them.

When to keep line breaks

Keep line breaks whenever the lines mean something: lists, addresses, poems, code, CSV rows or paragraphs. Remove extra spaces and Remove all spaces both keep them, and Remove extra spaces keeps blank lines between paragraphs too. Only choose Remove all whitespace when you really want a single line.

Common uses for removing spaces

  • Cleaning copied text from PDFs and emails full of double spaces.
  • Preparing data for a spreadsheet or database, where stray spaces stop values matching.
  • Phone numbers, IBANs, codes and IDs that must be entered without spaces.
  • Tidying lists before comparing them, so "apple" and "apple " match.
  • Checking length limits, since extra spaces count as characters.

Whitespace clean-up is formatting, not optimization: search engines already ignore repeated spaces in page text, so it won't change how a page ranks.

Examples of removing spaces

The same text in each mode, produced by the tool's own code. Whitespace is shown as · for a space, → for a tab and ↵ for a line break.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove spaces from text?

Paste your text into the box and choose what to remove: trim the start and end, remove extra spaces, remove all spaces, or remove all whitespace. The result appears straight away; press Copy Result or Download TXT.

What is the difference between removing spaces and removing extra spaces?

Remove extra spaces keeps one space between words and only removes the surplus: "Hello world" becomes "Hello world". Remove all spaces deletes every space, so "Hello world" becomes "Helloworld".

What does trim mean?

Trimming removes whitespace from the very beginning and end of the text only. Spaces between words and line breaks inside the text are left exactly as they are.

Does removing extra spaces keep my line breaks?

Yes. Remove extra spaces works line by line: it turns repeated spaces and tabs into one space and removes spaces at the start and end of each line, but every line break and blank line stays where it was.

What is the difference between spaces and whitespace?

A space is the character you type with the space bar. Whitespace is the wider family of invisible spacing characters: spaces, tabs, line breaks, no-break spaces and other Unicode space characters. Remove all spaces removes space characters (including no-break spaces) but keeps tabs and line breaks; Remove all whitespace removes all of them.

Will removing all whitespace remove line breaks?

Yes. Remove all whitespace deliberately removes line breaks, so every line is joined into one continuous line. Use Remove extra spaces if you want to keep your lines.

Does the tool remove tabs?

It depends on the mode. Remove extra spaces turns tabs into a single space, Remove all whitespace removes them, Trim removes them only at the start and end of the text, and Remove all spaces leaves tabs in place.

What happens to non-breaking spaces?

Non-breaking spaces, often copied in from web pages and Word documents, are treated as spaces: Remove extra spaces turns them into normal spaces, and Remove all spaces and Remove all whitespace remove them.

Are zero-width characters removed?

No. Zero-width spaces and byte-order marks are invisible, but Unicode doesn't classify them as whitespace, so no mode removes them. Everything else in your text, including punctuation, numbers and emoji, is left untouched.

Does it work with other languages?

Yes. Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, accented letters and emoji are preserved exactly; only whitespace is changed. The wide ideographic space used in Chinese and Japanese text counts as whitespace.

How much text can I process?

Up to 1,000,000 characters. Up to 200,000 characters the result updates as you type; above that, press Remove Spaces.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your text is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to Q3 Labs.

Is this tool free?

Yes. It is free and needs no account.

Does removing spaces help SEO?

No, not by itself. Removing spaces is a text-formatting operation. Search engines ignore extra spaces in page text, so tidying them won't change rankings. It is useful for cleaning up data, code and copied text.
