Image metadata is information embedded inside an image file alongside its pixels — describing the camera or software that created it, when it was taken, and sometimes where. It travels inside the file itself rather than being visible when you simply look at the picture.

Metadata can unintentionally share more than you mean to when posting or sending a photo — your exact location, the device you used, or the date and time you were somewhere. Removing it before sharing reduces what a photo reveals beyond its visible content.

Many platforms strip some or all metadata as part of their own upload processing, but this varies by platform, can differ between photo and video, and can change without notice. Don't rely on any specific platform to remove sensitive metadata for you — check or clean it yourself first if it matters.
