What Is Keyword Density?
Keyword density is the percentage of a piece of text made up by a specific keyword or phrase: occurrences divided by total word count, multiplied by 100. It's a simple, descriptive frequency calculation, not a judgment about whether that frequency is good or bad for search visibility.
How to Calculate Keyword Density
If a piece of content has 1,000 words and a target phrase appears 15 times, the density is (15 ÷ 1,000) × 100 = 1.5%. That number describes how often the phrase repeats relative to the whole text, nothing more.
Is There an Ideal Keyword Density?
No. Search engines don't publish a universal target percentage, and this tool deliberately doesn't invent one. Any specific number you've seen elsewhere, like "aim for 2%", isn't an official standard, it's an unverified rule of thumb at best.
What Is Keyword Stuffing?
Keyword stuffing is repeating a word or phrase excessively and unnaturally, specifically to try to manipulate search rankings rather than to communicate clearly. It tends to make content harder to read and can run against search engines' spam policies, independent of exactly what density percentage it produces.
How to Use a Keyword Density Checker
- Paste your content into the text box above.
- Optionally enter a target keyword or phrase.
- Click Analyze.
- Review occurrences, density, and the automatic top-words and top-phrases breakdown.
- Use the interpretation guidance, not a score, to decide if anything reads unnaturally.
Keyword Frequency vs Keyword Density
Frequency is simply the raw count, how many times a term appears. Density expresses that count as a percentage of the total word count, which makes it easier to compare usage across texts of different lengths, a term appearing 10 times in a 200-word page is proportionally much more frequent than the same 10 occurrences in a 5,000-word article.
How Many Times Should a Keyword Appear?
There's no universal number to target. What matters more is whether the content is genuinely relevant to what someone searching for the topic wants, uses natural language, and covers the subject usefully, sometimes that means a term appears often because the topic calls for it, sometimes it barely repeats because related terminology carries the meaning instead.
Keyword Density for Long-Form Content
Longer content naturally dilutes density, the same 15 occurrences of a phrase produce a much lower percentage in a 3,000-word guide than in a 300-word page. This is expected and not itself a problem, a comprehensive piece covering a topic thoroughly will use many supporting words and related terms alongside the exact target phrase.
Keyword Density vs Semantic Relevance
Content can thoroughly and clearly cover a topic while using related terminology, synonyms, and naturally varied phrasing instead of repeating one exact phrase over and over. Modern search engines are generally understood to evaluate topical relevance well beyond simple exact-phrase repetition, so writing naturally and comprehensively tends to serve readers, and search visibility, better than optimizing for a density number.
