What is a percent off calculator?

A percent off calculator works out a discount for you: how much money a percentage discount takes off, and the price you pay afterwards. It's useful in sales, when comparing offers, pricing your own products, or checking a bill.

A discount is always a percentage of the original price, so the calculator starts there and shows each step.

How to calculate a percentage discount

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20% = 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20.
  2. Multiply the original price by it to get the saving: 1,000 × 0.20 = 200.
  3. Subtract the saving from the original price: 1,000 − 200 = 800.

Percent off formula

Discount amount = Original price × Discount % ÷ 100

Final price = Original price − Discount amount

How to calculate the final sale price

You can skip the saving and go straight to the price you pay. At 20% off you pay 80% of the price:

Final price = Original price × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100)

Final price = 1,000 × (1 − 0.20) = 1,000 × 0.80 = 800

Step-by-step discount examples

₹1,000.00 at 20% off

Discount: ₹1,000.00 × 0.20 = ₹200.00
Final price: ₹1,000.00 − ₹200.00 = ₹800.00

$79.99 at 15% off

Discount: $79.99 × 0.15 = $12.00 (14.9985, rounded to the cent)
Final price: $79.99 − $12.00 = $67.99

₹2,499.00 at 35% off

Original price ₹2,499.00, discount 35%, you save ₹874.65, and the final price is ₹1,624.35.

How two consecutive discounts work

Discounts applied one after another don't add up. The second one is taken from the already reduced price. Starting at ₹100, 20% off gives ₹80; another 20% off that gives ₹64.

The total reduction is ₹36 on ₹100, which is 36%, not 40%. To work out a combined discount, multiply what you pay at each step: 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64, so you pay 64% and save 36%.

Percent off vs percentage increase

20% off takes 20% of the original price away: 100 becomes 80. A 20% increase adds 20% of the starting value: 100 becomes 120. Undoing one with the other doesn't work, because the starting amounts differ: 80 plus 20% is 96, not 100. To recover an original price from a sale price, divide instead: 80 ÷ 0.8 = 100, or use the Reverse Percentage Calculator.

Percentage points describe the difference between two percentages. A discount that goes from 20% to 30% has risen by 10 percentage points, which is not the same as rising by 10%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percent off?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the original. For ₹1,000 at 20% off: 1,000 × 20 ÷ 100 = 200, and 1,000 − 200 = 800.

How do I calculate the price after a discount?

Final price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). At 20% off you pay 80% of the price, so multiply by 0.8: 1,000 × 0.8 = 800.

What does 20% off mean?

It means the price is reduced by 20% of the original price. You save a fifth of the price and pay the remaining 80%.

Is a 20% discount the same as a 20% increase in reverse?

No. Taking 20% off 100 gives 80, but adding 20% to 80 gives 96, not 100, because each percentage is taken from a different starting amount. To find the original price from a sale price, use the Reverse Percentage Calculator.

Do two 20% discounts make 40% off?

No. The second discount is taken from the already reduced price: 100 → 80 → 64. That's 36% off in total, not 40%.

Can a discount be more than 100%?

Not as a real discount. At 100% off the item is free; anything more would mean a negative price. The calculator accepts discounts from 0% to 100% and explains why higher values are rejected.

What about a negative discount?

A negative discount would be a price increase, so the calculator doesn't accept it as a discount. Enter a discount from 0% to 100%.

Can I use decimals?

Yes, in both fields: for example $79.99 at 12.5% off. Thousands separators (1,250.00) and a % sign are accepted too.

How are the results rounded?

The calculation keeps full precision internally and rounds only for display, to 2 decimal places (half a cent or more rounds up). The saving is rounded first and the final price is the original minus that saving, so the figures always add up.

Does the currency selector convert currencies?

No. It only adds a symbol to the results. The calculator never converts between currencies or uses exchange rates.

Does the calculator include sales tax or VAT?

No. It calculates the discount on the price you enter. If a price includes tax, the discount applies to the tax-inclusive price; if tax is added at checkout, add it after the discount.

Are my numbers saved or sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; the numbers you enter are not sent to Q3 Labs or stored.

Is this calculator free?

Yes. It is free and needs no account.
