Every year someone declares technical SEO "dead" — replaced by AI content, or backlinks, or whatever this quarter's trend is. Every year, the sites that actually rank are the ones that got the fundamentals right first.
Here's the checklist we run against every client site before we touch a single piece of content.
1. Crawlability and indexation
Search engines can't rank what they can't crawl. Start with the basics:
- A clean, accurate
robots.txtthat isn't accidentally blocking key sections - An XML sitemap that's actually submitted to Search Console and kept current
- No orphaned pages — every important page should be reachable through internal links
- A crawl budget audit for larger sites, so bots aren't wasting time on parameter-heavy duplicate URLs
2. Core Web Vitals
Page experience signals aren't just a ranking factor — they're a conversion rate factor. We target:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) under 2.5 seconds
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) under 0.1
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) under 200ms
Most of the wins here come from unglamorous work: image optimization, font loading strategy, and trimming unnecessary client-side JavaScript.
3. Structured data
Schema markup doesn't guarantee rich results, but it removes ambiguity for search engines trying to understand your content. At minimum, we implement:
OrganizationandWebSiteschema sitewideBreadcrumbListon every nested pageFAQPageon any page with genuine FAQ contentArticleorBlogPostingon every content page
4. Information architecture
A flat, logical URL structure and clear internal linking hierarchy does more for topical authority than most link-building campaigns. If your SEO & Organic Growth strategy doesn't include a content architecture review, you're leaving rankings on the table.
The takeaway
None of this is exciting. That's exactly why most competitors skip it — and exactly why it still works.
